How is it calculated?
Gematria is an ancient practice from Jewish tradition in which every Hebrew letter represents a number. It appears in the Talmud and in classic Torah commentaries, often used to link words and names that share the same value. The calculation is simple: go through the word letter by letter, replace each letter with its value — א=1 through י=10, כ=20 through צ=90, ק=100, ר=200, ש=300, ת=400 — and add everything up. Final letters take the same value as their regular forms, and any character that is not a Hebrew letter is simply skipped.
Full example: שלום = ש(300) + ל(30) + ו(6) + ם(40) = 376, and אהבה = א(1) + ה(5) + ב(2) + ה(5) = 13. Note that other counting methods exist — mispar katan reduces each value to a single digit, and mispar siduri uses each letter's position in the alphabet — but this calculator uses the standard method, the one in which chai = 18 and shalom = 376.
